July 27, 2013. A rite of passage for many young men was entrance into Jack Norman’s “Girlie-Show” on James E. Strates Midway. The last show of its kind lasted on the Strates midway until early 80s.

Girlies Were a Midway Hit
Thursday, June 27th, 2013Don’t Throw Away that Art Project!
Friday, June 21st, 2013IT’S FINALLY SUMMER! Time to empty out lockers, backpacks, and take-home folders and start sifting through the mountains of papers that have accumulated throughout the year. Hang a few good math tests on the fridge, file away those report cards and enter your kid’s artwork into the Fair!
They worked so hard all year round to make beautiful pieces, why not let them showcase it to all of WNY?
There is still time to enter artwork of all kinds (photography, ceramics, painting, drawings…) into the 2013 Fair. Kids ages 5-17 can enter the fine arts competitions and have an opportunity to take home Blue Ribbon of their own from the Erie County Fair.
Entry is simple, just download the entry form here, fill it out and send it in with the entry fee by Friday, July 19 and prepare to drop off the artwork before the Fair.
Adults, we didn’t forget about you! There is still time for you to enter your artwork, antiques, quilts and more with competitive exhibits. Click here to head to the websites and see all of the categories you can enter.
Keep in mind the following deadlines for competitive exhibits so you don’t miss out on your chance to exhibit your work at the Fair:
Creative Arts: July 19th
Woodcarving: July 19th
Conservation: July 26th
Grange: August 1st
Home Wine: August 2nd
Remembering Lost Flip Flops…and the Sky Ride
Thursday, June 20th, 2013July 20, 2013. This early 1970’s view of the famous James E. Strates Midway features the Sky Ride chairlift and the Sky Diver. Unlike a traditional Ferris Wheel, The Sky Diver sported small caged cars that were able to rotate horizontally while the wheel turned vertically. Fairgoers who rode the Sky Ride over the length of the midway would often mistakenly drop a flip flop or clog on the carnival tents below.
Introducing Throwback Thursdays!
Thursday, June 20th, 2013In the world of social media there are many trends and fads floating around. One of the more popular weekly celebrations on platforms such as Facebook and Twitter is Throwback Thursdays. People partaking in the “festivities” will post a photo of themselves from years past, whether it be a baby photo, kindergarten graduation, or their parents’ wedding photo.
The Erie County Fair, as it prepares for its 175th Fair in 2014, has been digging through the old photo albums too and we want to share some of our old throwback photos with all of our devoted fairgoers. So, each Thursday we will be posting a photo from past Fairs on our Facebook page along with a description of where the photo was taken. It will hopefully bring long time fairgoers back to the past to relive some of their favorite Fair memories as well as teach our younger guests the long history the Erie County Fair has shared with WNY.
For our fairgoers who do not have Facebook, we are posting all of the Throwback Thursday photos and descriptions here. Feel free to comment and add your own memories right here on the blog.
Erie County Fair Looking for Interns!
Monday, June 17th, 2013If you are looking for a summer job that will provide you with great experience as well as a one of a kind networking opportunity, then the Erie County Fair may be the place for you.
The Erie County Fair is looking for students who are studying or interested in studying communications, journalism or marketing to help assist the media while they are on the Fairgrounds. Applicants can be high school or college students. The job requires interns to assist media while they are on the grounds working on filming, photographing or writing about the Fair. Interns will have the opportunity to see what goes into searching for a good news story as well as how production works in the field.
The internship runs starting the first week in August with two orientation days prior to the Fair and then through the end of the Fair and cleanup (August 1-20). If you already have a job or internship, we are flexible and will work with your schedule as we have hours throughout the day and on weekends. Applicants are required to have a valid driver’s license as you will be operating a golf cart on the grounds.
This is an excellent experience to see how the media operates in the field a well as a chance to network with media professionals in the area.
If you are interested in this position please send your name, email and phone number to hollys@ecfair.org for more information or to RSVP to one of our information sessions, which will be held in the Fairgrounds Event Center on June 24th from 4pm-6pm and June 25th from 3pm-5pm. (You only need to attend one)
We hope to see you as part of our staff this year.
