August 15 & 16. 6:00pm Lucas Oil Truck and Tractor Pull. The initial shock of the sheer size of the tractors and trucks that take to the pull strip can be enough excitement for some, but its when the pullers fire up the engines and dig into the dirt the crowd explodes! The truck and tractor pull has been a long time tradition at the Fair, so long in fact that the Fair’s pull is the fifth oldest in the country. Both shows will feature six classes of pullers coming from more than 10 states and Canada. WNY Pro Pullers will also compete in this event, representing the best the area has to offer in professional tractor pulling.  Tickets for the show are $20 for Pit Passes, $16 for Infield, $12 for Grandstand. Kids 12 and under are FREE to this event as well.

August 17. 1:00pm & 6:00pm World’s Largest Demolition Derby. What would the end of the Fair be without the demolition derby? More then 100 cars will get painted up and prepared for a competition that challenges competitors to outlast the others. The afternoon show sees a lot of returning drivers who will attempt to fix their cars in time to compete in the evening derby! The evening derby is usually a packed house. Fans cheer each hit, crash, and heat winner with the same enthusiasm as the last.

The demolition derbies will also feature reality TV stars Kings of Crash. These professional drivers will bring five teams to the track to compete in a separate team style derby. The afternoon event will have all five teams and the best three will move on to compete in the evening show. Guests can meet the Kings of Crash from 11:30am-1:00pm in the infield. Meet Our Newest Creative Arts Director…

Tuesday, February 18th, 2014

…Rachel Hamerski

T20140123_fashion_rachel_218he Creative Arts Exhibit at the Erie County Fair showcases the best of what WNY has to offer when it comes to canning, painting, photography, flower arranging and design. Every year the hardworking Creative Arts Directors strive to put a new spin on their areas of expertise to ensure the pieces are well displayed and the talented artists are highlighted properly.

In 2014, the Fair will welcome a fresh face to the list of Creative Arts Directors. Buffalo State College senior, Rachel Hamerski will join the group as the director for the Clothing Design and Construction Department. Though she is still in school, Hamerski, is well suited for the job ahead. She was recently selected as one of five students nationwide to be accepted into the Cotton University, which is a program developed by Cotton Incorporated.

Hamerski found a passion for fashion through college coursework, when she created a couture dress from 30 yards of zipper chain. From then on she has been exhibiting her creative ideas and sewing skills throughout the country…that’s right…the dress went on to be exhibited at Cotton Incorporated Headquarters in Cary, North Carolina!

Her love for the Fair began in 2011, when she first heard about the clothing design and construction category of Creative Arts.  She has been entering dresses ever since.

When asked what her most prized design is, Hamerski said it is a black and white houndstooth women’s jacket. Though she could not enter it in the 2013 fair (because it was being used for a fashion show) she looked forward to entering it in 2014. That was until Elaine Ellis, previous director of the section, got her interested in stepping up and taking her place as the new director.Hamerski_Photo

Though she won’t be able to exhibit her designs at this year’s Fair, Hamerski is looking forward to bringing a new approach, new categories and a modern display to the clothing design and construction department. Looking ahead to 2015, Hamerski is hoping to incorporate a fashion show into the Fair too!

If she could offer advice to those looking to enter a design into the Fair or pursue a career in clothing design, Hamerski says “one entry at a time will help you become the best in your craft. It helps to listen to the criticism and feedback from any avenue.”

If you are interested in entering in any of the 2014 Creative Arts categories, look for entry information beginning May 2!

Bryan Wittman: Working for The Mouse…but Started at the Fair

Wednesday, November 20th, 2013

This week the Erie County Fair had the honor of naming Bryan Wittman an Honorary Chairman of the 175th Fair. For those who don’t know Bryan Wittman personally, they have certainly seen his work. Wittman is the current Vice President of Global Special Events for Disney Parks and Resorts. He has been at the head of Disney Cruise Line christenings, Super Bowl Halftime Shows, the Rose Parade and other Disney Productions.

Before he worked for the Main Mouse himself, Wittman got his start right here at the Erie County Fair as a stage manager at the outdoor theater in 1975.  One of his fondest Fair memories involves working with than Erie County Fair Hall of Famer, Ramblin’ Lou!  When Wittman looks back on his experiences here at the Fair he remembers it was the faces of the audience during his theater shows that kept him going. That passion for entertainment and the happiness of others is what has continued to drive his career even today.

While Disney has parks and resorts all over the world, there is only one place that Wittman calls home, Hamburg, NY. Having been born and raised here in WNY, Wittman and his wife Kathy still keep a residence here in the 716. Wittman has graduated from St. Francis High School and then went to college at Ashland University in Ohio.

Wittman will be assisting in guiding the creative planning process of the 175th anniversary Fair’s events and promotions. Fair CEO Denny Lang said of Wittman’s naming “We are extremely proud to welcome Bryan back into the Erie County Fair family…”  wittamn.png
