Welcome to the World Dustin and Dominic!

Sunday, August 19th, 2012

It was a busy night at the Ag-sperience Moo-turnity Ward! The Erie County Fair welcomed two calves overnight Saturday August 17, to the wee hours of the morning Sunday.

First, Daisy the Jersey cow gave birth to a 60 pound calf named Dominic around 10pm Satruday night. The Moo-turnity staff was barely able to celebrate because just a few hours later Holstein, Peggy Sue, went into labor and delivered a 100 pound calf named Dustin at around 2am.

For those who stuck around it was an exciting night that brought the 2012 Erie County Fair calf total to 5. There is still one more hefer in the Moo-turnity Ward but time is running out for her to give birth during this year’s Fair.

If you missed the delivery of the calves you can still catch all the cuteness in the Ag-sperience barn where all five calves and mothers are awaiting visitors. Don’t miss the 2012 Erie County Fair, which concludes today, August 18.

Have a WILD Day!

A Giraffe made out of what??????

Thursday, August 2nd, 2012

Entries have been pouring in at the Erie County Fairgrounds and are beginning to fill up the Creative Arts Exhibit. There have been beautiful photos, amazing lego creations, detailed quilts and incredible paintings but there is one piece that really stands out…literally.

Meet Abby’s giraffe…it is unlike anything that the Creative Arts Exhibit has seen before. It stands 8ft tall and you will be shocked to hear how she made it…its crocheted!!!

Unbelievable, right? It took Abby, who is just 18, a whole month (she broke it down over several months but estimates that her time smushed togethter was about a month) to complete the creation. She crocheted all the pieces and her dad helped her build the framework.

Abby has been crocheting since she was little and was always facinated by the afghans on display at the Fair. She entered the Junior Bucket of Junk contest a few years ago and wanted to try her hand at getting another Blue Ribbon. She decided instead of crocheting a afghan she wanted to do something bigger…much bigger and chose to crochet an 8 foot structure of her favorite animal…the giraffe.

She took the saying “go big or go home” literally with her large and creative entry.

Stop into the Creative Arts Exhibit to see this amazing entry and over 4,000 other creative pieces.

The Erie County Fair is WILD about Recycling!

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

There is so much to go WILD about at the 2012 Erie County Fair! Wild about the Rides, Wild about the Food, Wild about the Animals….

This year we are going WILD about Recycling! With one million people entering the gates each and every year it takes an army to keep the Fairgrounds clean and green year after year and we need everyone’s help. But it isn’t just about keeping the Fair clean it is about making a difference and doing our part to help the environment!

If each fairgoer recycled one aluminum can  it would save enough electricity to power a television set for 342 years!

Modern Recycling handles the majority of the recycling at the Erie County Fair using their single stream technology. This new innovation allows all recyclable items to be thrown in a single container with no sorting. It is Modern’s hope that people will find recycling more convenient and will partcipate more frequently.

For more information on Modern Recycling check out their website here!

The rest of the Fair’s recycling is done with the help of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County’s 4-H Youth Development. The 4-H kids will have designated locations around the Fairgrounds where you can drop off your recyclable items! This is where you can do your part and help reduce the amount of waste.

With 1 Million fairgoers each and every season the Erie County Fair hopes everyone will take part in our recycling efforts, not just while you are here at the Fair but at home as well.

A greener planet….That’s something to go Wild About!
